A re-visitation of the collection of "the places for reflection and remembrance" for the podular aruba medical facility.  The graphic attempts to convey the individual inspirations and origins that guided the design of each.  Despite their differences, they are all united in their programatic existence: to help in personal reflection and/ or remembrance.

It is common practice to adorn the casket of a dearly departed loved one with a colorful bouquet of flowers. It is this gesture that has inspired the following chapel/ place of reflection and remembrance.

     “Light is symbolic of the Light of Christ or the light of knowledge and truth. It is the opposite of darkness. One may hear the saying "I have seen the light" meaning that one has a testimony of Christ and the truthfulness of the gospel.”

     Chapelopolis is an architectural response to the influence light plays in spirituality and spaces of sensitivity.  While it may be praised for its technological forwardness, it is intended to be a simple structure to address life’s more complicated issues of faith and inner peace.

“The Christian doctrine of the Trinity defines God as three divine persons or hypostases: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. The three persons are distinct yet coexist in unity, and are co-equal, co-eternal and consubstantial. Put another way, the three persons of the Trinity are of one being. The Trinity is considered to be a mystery of Christian faith.”

    
      Implying the existence of a programmatic relationship between the Trinity and a physical chapel is expressed in this concept design.  The spaces, collectively, can serve a single purpose to satisfy a spiritual or emotionally charged event; or they can provide a venue for three separate simultaneous events.  All-in-all, they are present to possess a clear and concise function as well as a mysterious form.

Two more investigations into MOVEMENT

 

The first diagram is a Spiral Approach. In the top diagram I am proposing that once a patient is in the recovery stage of their surgery, that their physical room will move to the outside of the facility and slowly begin to spiral down the building until reaching the first floor of full recovery. There is a "central core building" that is stationary where all the appropriate functions are divided amonst floor:

1st Floor: Entrance/ Lobby

2nd Floor: Consultation

3rd Floor: Pre-Op

4th Floor:Surgery/Operation

5th Floor: Post-Op

 

The second diagram, is experimenting with the rooms sliding horizontal and vertical in a puzzle/pattern like design. Same idea applies, as a patient gets better their room will move horizontal (right or left), and per doctor's evaluation, their room will slide down to the next floor and the same process occurs every floor until reaching the first floor of recovery. What sets this idea apart from the others, is the rooms would have the capability to protude off the building to allow other rooms to move past them (in the instance a patient is healing faster than another).

"Breathing" public - private curtain wall

Using a fragmented curtain wall with elastic stretchy rubber joints that allow for movement, i am changing the typical curtain wall into a living breathing interactive structure. With the structure located on the inside of the curtain wall, the privacy level controlled by the guest is changed from public to semi-private, to private, the curtain wall slowly changes from a transparent linear wall to a convex translucent waved of always changing glass.

Controlled public / Local Access

Initial Sketch idea to be able to visually control the interaction between locals and those vacationing at the resort. When the average building privacy is set to primarily private, the main access to the site becomes smaller by an extrusion of cubes. The resort is still accessible. This Pathway is more of a signal stating that majority of surgeries have taken place recently, to prevent uncomfortable interactions between any patients, guests, or locals.

A simple idea sketch of how all the electrically frosted glass walls are not only controlled manually by the guests, but their body temperature will trigger the glass to be translucent or transparent. This Idea will help naturally control the patients body temp, by increasing or decreasing their body temp by natural light or shading the room.
